Program Notes: Commissioned for the inaugural concert on the Margaret Metcalf Organ at the St. Luke's Chapel, Medical University of South Carolina, this work features rapid passage work which was intended to exploit the virtues of this fine two-manual instrument built by Gene Bedient & Co., upon which it was premiered in the spring of 1995. RE: the letters L.U. in measure 16. A page turner for Dame Mayra Hess once noted in her performing scores the frequent indication "L. U." Puzzled, he waited for the concert. During her performance that evening, at each spot in the score so indicated, the great pianist would slowly, soulfully raise her eyes heavenward. The good Dr., William D. Gudger, was instructed to do this in his premiere performance of this work; we decided to leave it in!
