This Work: FANFARE FOR A CONVOCATION

was commissioned for the Inaugural Program for the 20th president of the College of Charleston: Leo I. Higdon Jr., on March 26, 2002, and premiered that afternoon. The text below he chose for this occasion is from a letter that George Washington wrote to Alexander Hamilton:

"Education is one of the

surest means of enlightening

and giving

just ways of thinking to our

citizens."

The following text is a quotation by Anatole France

"To accomplish great things,

we must not only act,

but also dream

not only plan,

but also believe."

"Dream Plan Believe" is a motto excerpted from the above that served as a frontispiece for the published program, and which I made into a musical motto that reoccurs throughout this short 2 minute anthem for Choir and Brass Octet: 2 Trumpets in Bb, 4 Horns, Trombone and Bass Tuba. The score presented on line free here may be performed with either piano or organ. If the parts are purchased [from DAPrint, Omaha for$15 for the complete set with bound conductor's score and vocal score and brass parts] and the work is performed with brass octet, the piano/organ part is only for rehearsal--and helpful as cues for the singers.
