Dictionary of Musical Themes

Notation Index

Explaination: Tired of hearing that elusive Maves' theme running through your mind, one that you just can't quite remember to what work it belongs? Use this page to "look it up". First transpose the melody to the key of "C" and then then go to the Notation Index, find it there and then go to (click) the example which will take you to the Thematic Catalog which will be in the Köchel Catalog. From there you may go to (click) the example which will take you to a page which will describe the work in some detail--with score and short Real Audio examples of some (eventually all of) the available works. (For more complete directions about how to use the Notation Index click tutorial.)

Directions on how to use this thematic dictionary (notation index): If, for example, you wanted to find America (or God Save the Queen!) First, transpose that to the key of C and then look up the letters alphabetically. So the letters would come out (in C): CCDBCDEEFEDC; you would find this in the index in alphabetic order; in minor, the above would read: CCDBCDEbEbFEbDC); click that for a the actual musical notation. From there, can click directly to a page describing the work in detail. In some cases, with repeated notes, in order to save space, something like the above might be written: C2DBCDE2FEDC. (Note: C comes before C# which comes before Cb but after C.)
